ARE THEY STUPID..DO THEY THINK WE ARE..OR IS THIS A CONSPIRACY TO DENY DISABLED VETS BENEFITS???

Steve from Alabama writes: "When I spoke to the VA rep on the phone, before I went to fill out the application, he flat said that ILP does not provide things like computers, etc."

Not only do they provide computers....but farm tractors...snowblowers....greenhouses....dog training....electric gates....enhanced computer systems...ergonomic furniture....whatever it takes to serve the needs of the disabled vet

  1. I am a 100% P&T veteran. I did recieve IL back in 2004 where they provided a 2 unit intercom system from Radio Shack so that I could contact family members at the other end of the house if I needed help. Cost about $25. They also provided payment to an oline institution to help me with writing. This cost approximately $100.

The writing course was unable to be finished because my vision started to fail due to my diabetes. So the IL staff closed my case in 2006.

Now I have requested further support from the IL program to purchase a Kindle e-book reader so that I can read books. I also requested help in purchasing stands for my washing and dryer so that they would be at the appropriate hieght for me to use since I am in a wheel chair.

Even though they have had my case since Jan 8th, and they say they have to respond in less than 30 days, they did not even return my calls till yesterady. That is 5 months later. Then he asks me why I can't buy the stuff myself. He further says he doesn't know how to handle a second case for the same veteran and he will call back in a few days. He actually calls back in a few minutes and says he can't do another case for me ever. Then admits he can but needs a special reason and that I have to exhaust all other options for getting help first.

Do you have any idea on what the actual rules are for opening a second case for the Independent Living program?

  2. First, are your receiving Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)? If not apply immediately.
These are the steps I would then take in regards to ILP.
*Call Central Office VR&E 202-461-9637. Ask for the liaison that services your state. Explain the situation. This might resolve your situation depending on who your liaison is.
*Then call Rep Bob Filner 202-225-8045 explain situation and ask for assistance. Followup with a letter. If that is not possible tell them so.
*Then call Rep Stephanie Herseth-Sandin 202-225-2801 explain the situation and ask for assistance. Followup with a letter if possible.
    IMPORTANT...IMPORTANT...IMPORTANT...
Do not give up....They CAN provide for your needs.
And please keep us updated as things unfold.

  3. My VA Vocab counselor never mentioned ILS to me and I have been 100% IU for 7 years. I have a learning disability and hoping they can provide me with a laptop for college. Should I bring this up in our next appointment?
